Czech Republic D35 motorway and infrastructure development
Overview
Infrastructure development in the Czech Republic involves various regional road maintenance and large-scale highway projects. In Prague, maintenance on the Lochkov and Cholupický tunnels and surface replacement on Cínovecká street are planned to impact traffic.
On a national scale, a consortium of Budimex and Firesta-Fišer has been awarded a 1.066 billion CZK contract by the Czech Road and Motorway Directorate to construct the Úlibice bypass and a new interchange on the D35 highway. This project includes 1.6 km of motorway, over 2 km of relocated road, a new junction, and approximately 80 structures, including bridges. Construction is expected to begin between late 2025 and early 2026, with a projected completion in 2029.
Significant progress has been made regarding the D35 motorway expansion via a public-private partnership (PPP). The Czech government has approved a concession agreement for the 35.4-kilometer section connecting Opatovec to Mohelnice. The project, valued at approximately 71.32 billion CZK, was awarded to the ViAlliance35 consortium—comprising Cintra Global SE, STRABAG Motorway GmbH, Budimex, and Invesis—which will handle construction, financing, operation, and maintenance. The scope also includes maintaining an additional 17 kilometers between Litomyšl and Opatovec.
Key components include the Maletín tunnel (1.3 kilometers) and the Dětřichov tunnel (nearly four kilometers), the latter of which will become the longest highway tunnel in the Czech Republic. Following expected financial closure in early 2027, construction is slated for completion by 2031 or 2032. The D35 is intended to serve as a northern alternative to the congested D1 motorway.
