Dallas Mavericks 2026-27 season preparations

Overview

The Dallas Mavericks are preparing for the 2026-27 NBA season, centered on the return of veteran guard Kyrie Irving following a 19-month absence due to a torn ACL. During the team’s preseason media day, the 34-year-old Irving announced he is fully recovered, faces no physical restrictions, and no longer experiences pain. Describing the rehabilitation process as “probably the best thing that happened to me,” Irving stated he possesses the “confidence of a champion.” Head coach Dusty May reported that Irving appears to be at 100% capacity during training camp, with teammates noting his movement remains unchanged.

As training camp progresses, head coach Dusty May is evaluating rotations, though Irving and rookie Cooper Flagg have been identified as the team’s core players. Teammate PJ Washington noted that Irving’s ability to draw defensive attention significantly aids the team's offensive flow. Irving, who is entering the second year of a three-year, $119 million contract, has stated his priority is to progress with his teammates.

The Mavericks are seeking to rebound from a difficult previous season in which they recorded a 26-56 record. While Irving is expected to be ready for the season opener against the Houston Rockets on October 21, trade speculation persists. Reports suggest the Miami Heat have expressed interest in the guard due to their need for playmaking depth. While no trade is considered imminent, analysts continue to link Irving to potential destinations such as the Heat and the Houston Rockets ahead of the February trade deadline.
