Death of Antoine de Massy in Monaco
Overview
Antoine de Massy, a 29-year-old member of the extended princely family of Monaco and second cousin to Prince Albert II, was found dead in a green space along Boulevard du Larvotto on October 25. He was the son of Baron Christian de Massy and Cécile Gelabale. His body was discovered after he failed to attend a scheduled family meal.
Autopsy results indicated the probable cause of death was a 13-meter fall from a boulevard into a courtyard or park area. A 42-year-old Ukrainian national, who was seen in the company of de Massy after the latter left a nightclub, has been placed in pre-trial detention. The suspect faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist a person in danger, though he denies the allegations.
In a recent interview with Corriere della Sera, the victim’s father, Baron Christian de Massy, rejected theories that the death was an accident or a suicide. He stated, “It was neither an accident nor suicide, nothing of the sort, but I cannot talk about it now because the investigation is ongoing.”
Antoine de Massy was a former aspiring professional tennis player who had lived in Florida to pursue training and studies. A private funeral service was held on November 4 at the Monaco Cathedral. Mourners included Prince Albert II, Princess Charlene, Princess Caroline of Hannover, and Princess Stéphanie. Alexandre Grimaldi, the 23-year-old son of Prince Albert II, served as a pallbearer and delivered a eulogy, describing de Massy as his “big brother.”
