Delhi crackdown and casualties from illegal Chinese Manjha
Overview
In late July 2026, Delhi Police’s Special Staff seized 424 reels of banned Chinese Manjha—a hazardous kite‑string coated with abrasive glass—during a raid on a storage site in the capital. One suspect was arrested and a case filed, with investigators beginning to trace the supply chain.
A few days later, on August 1–3, officers expanded the operation to the Dayalpur area of northeast Delhi. Two men were detained and 37 additional reels were confiscated after police stopped a shop in Nehru Vihar and later apprehended a seller in Ghaziabad. The investigation identified a vendor in Murad Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, as a likely source.
On August 11, the crackdown extended to West Delhi. Following a tip-off, police intercepted a silver car near Khayala and apprehended three men—Rajesh, Asad, and Sohail—recovering 1,398 reels of prohibited plastic manjha.
By August 16, the dangers of the prohibited material were highlighted by fatal and non-fatal incidents in the Delhi-NCR region. In Ghaziabad, a 25-year-old delivery worker, Raviraj, died after the string became entangled around his neck while riding a motorcycle on National Highway-9. In northeast Delhi’s Maujpur area, 35-year-old Gaurav Sharma was injured when manjha from a stray kite slit his throat at a traffic signal; he was reported to be out of danger.
In response to these incidents, Delhi Police conducted further operations in central Delhi, arresting two men and seizing 42 packets of banned Chinese manjha and three chakris.
