Digital literacy and technical education in NL and BE
Overview
Digital literacy and technical education initiatives continue to expand across the Netherlands and Belgium through regional programs.
In Belgium, Digitale Week 2026 is scheduled for October 6 to 16 in Retie. Themed ‘The Evolution of the Digital World’, the event will provide activities for all ages, including app programming workshops using MIT App Inventor and guidance on safely using government digital services such as MyGov and Mijn Burgerprofiel.
Technical education in the Netherlands is seeing increased engagement and resource allocation to address technical talent shortages. In Vlaardingen, Mayor Frederik Zevenbergen has officially opened the TOV Experience Center. Designed to serve students from primary school through the fourth year of secondary education, the facility features fourteen specialized stations where professional coaches guide students through practical assignments. Supported by local entrepreneurs, schools, and the RegioDeal Waterweg, the center aims to connect youth directly with industries facing labor shortages.
Other regional outreach efforts include the PET IJmond event in Beverwijk, organized by Techport on behalf of SWITCH IJmond/Zuid-Kennemerland. This program provides workshops in sectors like steel, offshore, manufacturing, and green energy to encourage students to pursue technical career paths.
Additional Dutch initiatives include the De Romein-TechforFun organization, which received technical tools from Techkwadraat to support primary school workshops. In Lelystad, approximately 1,500 students participated in ‘Techniek Tastbaar Lelystad’, while the Makersfestival Zwolle plans to expand into a full ‘making and technology week’ in March 2027 under the theme ‘Further than here’ to address challenges in AI, energy, and circularity.
