Disaster preparedness and first aid training in Turkey
Overview
Turkish municipalities and health directorates continue to expand disaster preparedness and emergency response training across several regions.
In Aydın, the Aydın Provincial Health Directorate and the Ministry of Health have commenced a three-day pilot program for Hospital Disaster Teams (HAT). Involving 25 health workers across five specialized teams of doctors and medical staff, the initiative is inspired by international Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMAT). The training focuses on disaster management, triage, evacuation, and hospital-wide intervention to ensure rapid, coordinated responses during critical periods.
In Ankara, training efforts have diversified. The Keçiören Municipality, in collaboration with the Ministry of Family and Social Services, provides psychological first aid training to staff using role-playing to identify psychosocial needs. Meanwhile, the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality is conducting disaster awareness and first aid sessions for daycare teachers and administrators in the Çankaya district, specifically addressing childhood accidents and the evacuation of children with special needs.
To observe World First Aid Day, the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality conducted a practical drill at the Kızılay 15 Temmuz Milli İrade Metro Station, simulating responses to heart attacks and choking. The municipality is also working to install Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in high-traffic areas and offers free certified training to residents. In Manisa, the Manisa Metropolitan Municipality distributed first aid kits to all neighborhood mukhtars to ensure local leaders can provide immediate assistance before professional medical teams arrive.
