Docomo Bank rebranding and service integration in Japan
Overview
Following online criticism of its new logo, Sumishin SBI Net Bank announced on 29 July that the rebranded “Docomo Bank” app would allow users to choose between the new icon or earlier designs by the end of September 2026.
On 3 August, pending regulatory approval, the corporate name changed to “Docomo SMTB Net Bank” and the consumer brand became “Docomo Bank,” retiring the “d NEOBANK” name. The launch features a cash-back reward of up to 4.5% on everyday purchases through a tiered system: 1% basic, up to 2% for account-debit transactions, and up to 1.5% when linked with Monex Securities. To support this, the bank is implementing an OMO (online-merges-with-offline) strategy, aiming to expand full banking and securities support from 200 locations to 1,000 by the end of the fiscal year and over 1,500 within five years using approximately 2,000 Docomo shops.
By 20 August, the bank further integrated with d Account, allowing users to earn d Points through activities such as receiving salaries and handling transfers. Customers using the bank as their primary d Card withdrawal account can achieve a point return rate of up to 3% in their first year for d Barai and d Card transactions. Additionally, high-balance customers may receive point rewards equivalent to d Card annual fees; balances exceeding 10 million yen for three consecutive months can qualify for full annual fee reimbursements. Existing Smapro Points are converted to d Points upon linking accounts.
On 28 August, Docomo SMTB Net Bank and Monex Securities launched a collaborative service featuring a 24/7 automatic deposit (sweep) service. This allows fee-free transfers from the bank to Monex Securities when funds are insufficient for domestic stocks or investment trusts. Users can now apply for both bank and securities accounts simultaneously to have the automatic deposit service pre-configured.
