Dominican Republic consular expansion in New York

Overview

The Dominican Republic has expanded its consular presence in New York City through the establishment of new, permanent facilities authorized by the United States Department of State.

On August 20, the Dominican Republic inaugurated its first formal Annexed Consular Office in the Bronx, located at 305 E. Fordham Road. Consul General Jesús Vázquez Martínez described the opening as a “historic milestone” for the diaspora, transitioning from mobile operations to a permanent institutional presence that provides services such as passports, civil documentation, and legalizations.

By August 24, this expansion grew to include a new Consular Extension in Brooklyn at 2777 Atlantic Ave. These new locations in both the Bronx and Brooklyn are intended to decentralize services and provide easier access for residents, reducing the necessity for travel to Manhattan.

Following these openings, Radhamés Rodríguez, president of United Bodegas of America (UBA), praised the efficiency of the Dominican Republic’s Central Electoral Board (JCE) in New York. Rodríguez highlighted the importance of the Bronx office, noting that the initiative will positively impact thousands of residents by providing easier access to essential services.

By late August, while community leaders like Radhamés Rodríguez continued to welcome the new consular offices, other members of the diaspora in New York and New Jersey began calling for further improvements. Community leaders, including Ángel Mota Ramírez, have expressed concerns regarding the capacity of the JCE to meet demand, specifically requesting that the agency streamline the issuance of new identity cards (cédulas) abroad to better serve the diaspora's economic needs.
