Dutch e‑commerce and retail market dynamics

Overview

In early August 2026, Dutch retail statistics showed a 2.9% year‑on‑year increase in total turnover for June, driven by a 7.5% rise in online sales. Multichannel retailers saw about a 10% jump in online revenue, while pure‑play webshops grew 6%. Growth was strongest in consumer electronics (9%) and non‑food categories, whereas shoe, leather and furniture sales fell.

A few days later, a consumer‑panel survey highlighted challenges accompanying the e‑commerce expansion. Dutch shoppers reported returning 57 million items in the previous year, roughly one‑third of orders, mainly due to poor fit. Around a third experienced delivery problems such as mis‑delivery, loss or theft, and many found it difficult to obtain compensation. The panel linked these issues to high parcel volumes and pressure on delivery staff.

By late August, quarterly data for Q2 2026 indicated a 3.1% increase in total retail turnover. Online sales grew by an average of 6.2%, with multichannel retailers seeing a 7% increase and exclusive webshops growing by 5.4%. While retail bankruptcies fell to a three-year low of 59 during the April-June period, entrepreneur confidence remained in negative territory, with roughly 40% of business owners citing geopolitical situations as a concern.

In July 2026, retail turnover continued its upward trend, increasing by 2.8% year-on-year. Sales volume rose by 1.8%, with growth reported across all sub-sectors. Online sales grew by 3.8%, led by clothing and fashion (5.6%) and consumer electronics (5.4%). Within the non-food sector, turnover rose 3.6%, bolstered by a 12.5% increase in drugstores. The food and beverage sector saw a 1.5% rise, supported by a 1.6% increase in supermarket sales.
