The transplant surge that began in mid‑July 2026 has continued to expand across Romania and Moldova. On 11 July, teams in Iași performed the country’s first heart transplant and retrieved additional organs from two brain‑dead donors, supplying patients in Iași, Bucharest, Cluj‑Napoca and an Italian clinic. A parallel retrieval in Bistrița provided kidneys and a liver for a Cluj‑Napoca recipient.

The momentum carried into late July, when a 15‑year‑old in Chișinău received the Republic’s fifth paediatric live‑donor liver transplant, and a brain‑dead donor in Iași enabled five life‑saving transplants. In Brașov, a mother donated a kidney to her son, ending four years of dialysis.

In early August, medical efforts in Iași expanded to include two kidney transplants performed at ‘Dr. C. I. Parhon’ Hospital. These procedures, involving approximately 30 medical professionals, included a 52-year-old man from Botoșani with type 2 glomerulonephritis and a 43-year-old Moldovan citizen with polycystic kidney disease. The surgeries required specialized immunosuppression strategies due to the donor having hepatitis B. Parallel to these successes, emergency services demonstrated rapid response, such as a 20-minute helicopter transfer of a patient from Botoșani to the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Iași for acute myocardial infarction treatment.

Coordination between regional and national centers intensified throughout August. On 6 August, Bistrița Hospital coordinated with specialist centers in Cluj and Bucharest to retrieve livers, kidneys, and corneas from two donors. On 27 August, Târgu Mureș County Emergency Clinical Hospital conducted a complex multi-organ procurement from a 49-year-old donor, involving the harvest of a liver, kidneys, cornea, and bone tissue. The bone extraction was performed by Romania’s only specialized support team capable of such procedures.
