EasyJet labor disputes in Europe

Overview

Labor disputes involving easyJet staff continue to escalate across Europe. In France, pilots represented by the SNPL union have postponed their planned strike for September 13 and 14 to allow for renewed negotiations, moving the notice to September 24 and 25, 2026. The union seeks protections regarding unchangeable monthly schedules and compensation for changes exceeding two hours, noting that “no firm commitments have yet been secured”.

In Portugal, the cabin crew strike led by the SNPVAC union has begun to cause significant operational disruption. As the strike period from October 2 to 6 commenced, the union reported that approximately 80% of flights between the Lisbon, Porto, and Faro bases had been cancelled, describing the impact as “massive”. Specifically, 443 flights have been cancelled to date. The SNPVAC has also raised concerns regarding the legality of using crews from other European bases, such as France, to replace striking workers, and has warned of legal action if management personnel are used to operate flights.

The dispute is driven by demands for roster stability, seniority-based pay increases, and improved conditions within the company agreement. In response to the October industrial action, easyJet expects to operate approximately 55% of its flight schedule. The airline noted that while minimum services defined by authorities cover about 22% of its Portugal-based activity, it will continue to operate using aircraft and crews from other European bases not covered by the strike. A second strike period is scheduled for December 19 to 23, which is anticipated to cause greater disruption due to high holiday demand. The dispute remains under conciliation through DGERT.
