Ecatepec urban infrastructure and revitalization projects

Overview

The government of Ecatepec, led by Mayor Azucena Cisneros Coss, has initiated several public works projects aimed at addressing long-standing urban neglect and infrastructure issues.

Initial efforts focused on the rehabilitation of over one kilometer of roads, including the repaving of Tórtolas, Oriente 6, and Ignacio Zaragoza avenues. These works addressed decades of maintenance failures, such as sinkholes and drainage issues, while adding new lighting and greenery to the affected communities.

Following these infrastructure improvements, the administration announced a new initiative to paint the facades of more than 3,000 homes in the Sierra de Guadalupe region. This program, which began with a pilot project on Acacias Street, utilizes bright colors and new lighting to create a ‘Safe Path’ intended to combat regional stigmatization and improve urban safety.

Building on these local efforts, the ‘Plan Oriente’—an initiative supported by President Claudia Sheinbaum—has directed over 3 billion pesos toward the region. This large-scale investment has significantly expanded water network coverage from 35 percent to 80 percent through the rehabilitation of 71 wells and the construction of the Ciudad Cuauhtémoc Master Tank. The plan also encompasses the rehabilitation of 444 kilometers of roads and the creation of 305 safe pathways.
