Ecatepec urban rehabilitation and public space initiatives
Overview
The municipal government of Ecatepec has initiated several urban rehabilitation and public service programs. The administration first reclaimed Parque Texalpa, a public space previously under private control, and renovated it with murals and free community activities through the ‘Cambia de Cancha’ program. Mayor Azucena Cisneros Coss indicated an intention to rescue 500 such public spaces in the locality.
To address the reported deterioration of approximately 80 percent of the municipality’s streets, the administration launched the ‘Reventón de Bachetón Ecatepec 24/7’ program. This includes the ‘Domingos de Bachetón’ (Bachetón Sundays) initiative, which integrates local residents and Citizen Participation Councils to accelerate repairs. The operation utilizes over one thousand workers, including 12 daytime crews and 10 night shifts.
Additionally, the government launched the ‘Rastrillo Social’ operation in Santa María Tulpetlac as part of the ‘Ecatepec sin Mordidas’ platform to reclaim public spaces and improve mobility. This involves removing obstructions, such as recycling materials and residential structures built on sidewalks.
Expanding on these collaborative efforts, the ‘Cimientos de Esperanza Mano a Mano’ program was utilized in the Benito Juárez Cuarta Sección neighborhood. In this project, the municipal government provided construction materials while local families provided the labor to pave Tercera Cerrada de Rubén Darío, ending a 28-year wait for the community. The work included 122.5 linear meters of paving, curbs, and sidewalks. Mayor Cisneros Coss inaugurated the road, describing the project as the result of an “impressive community effort” and emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the government and the people.
