Chelsea midfield recruitment and squad updates
Overview
Following the £125 million sale of Enzo Fernández to Manchester City, Chelsea has shifted its focus toward several midfield recruitment strategies. To address the vacancy, manager Xabi Alonso has identified Barcelona midfielder Fermín López as a priority. Chelsea is reportedly preparing a significant transfer move for the 23-year-old during the January window, with a potential offer of approximately €140 million (£120 million) to test Barcelona’s resolve. This interest follows a failed attempt to sign Monaco’s Lamine Camara, a deal that reportedly collapsed after the player was prepared for a medical.
Negotiations regarding Fermín López remain complex; while Chelsea is prepared to exceed €100 million, Barcelona has expressed no intention of selling the player, who is under contract until 2031 and wishes to remain in Catalonia.
Alonso has also expanded his recruitment interests to include Villarreal winger Alberto Moleiro, with a potential offer of approximately €50 million discussed, though the player reportedly prefers a move to Barcelona.
In a reciprocal development, FC Barcelona is monitoring Chelsea’s 19-year-old Brazilian winger Estêvão. Barcelona is reportedly considering a massive offer of around €130 million to test Chelsea’s resolve, though no formal bid has been submitted and the club’s financial capacity to complete such a transaction is a factor.
Additionally, Chelsea continues to pursue AFC Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, considering a deal valued at approximately €90 million. On the squad front, Moises Caicedo, Jordan Henderson, Emmanuel Emegha, and Marco Palestra have faced injury concerns, while winger Pedro Neto has committed his future to the club with a contract extension until 2032.
