European waste oil recycling initiatives
Overview
Various European entities are implementing initiatives to collect and repurpose waste oils into valuable resources.
In North Macedonia, the Oiltek collective reported exceeding national waste oil collection targets. In 2025, the group collected over 450 tons of waste oil, reaching a 28% collection rate against a 15% national target. The organization is investing in domestic processing and recycling equipment to increase local treatment capacities and reduce reliance on exporting waste oil for treatment abroad.
In Poland, ORLEN and EMKA OIL have launched a pilot project in Płock featuring an ‘oilomat’ (or ‘Olejomat’) at a fuel station. This device allows residents to dispose of used cooking oil (UCO) to prevent it from entering sewage systems, where it can cause pipe blockages and damage wastewater treatment plants. The collected fats and oils are intended to be processed into raw materials for the production of advanced biofuel components as part of a circular economy strategy.
To encourage public participation, the Polish program utilizes a mobile application where users can earn points for correct disposal. These points can be redeemed for rewards, such as free coffee or hot dogs, or donated to educational institutions. Ireneusz Sitarski, Vice President of ORLEN for Downstream, noted that the project aims to turn waste into a resource while reducing dependence on external market volatility.
