Extreme heat across the United States

Extreme heat conditions have been reported across various regions of the United States. Initially, heat advisories were issued for Colorado, where temperatures were expected to reach near 106 degrees Fahrenheit, and Long Island, where heat index values were projected to hit 100 degrees.

By mid-August, the scope of extreme heat expanded to include Florida, where heat index values were expected to reach up to 112 degrees following a record high at Miami International Airport. Other areas under alert included Alabama, Southeast Idaho, and California, with the latter also facing wind advisories.

By late August, the heatwave expanded into the Midwest and South. In Indiana, heat index values were expected to reach up to 105 degrees, while parts of Illinois, Missouri, and Alabama experienced indices near or exceeding 100 degrees due to high humidity. Georgia also faced hazardous heat with indices potentially exceeding 100 degrees.

In early September, heat advisories continued in the Mid-Atlantic. In New Jersey, advisories covered the Jersey Shore—including Atlantic City, Wildwood Crest, and Cape May—as well as Ocean, Camden, Gloucester, and parts of Burlington and Monmouth counties. In Pennsylvania, the advisory affected Philadelphia and the counties of Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks, Berks, and Chester. Delaware’s New Castle County also faced advisory conditions, with heat index values expected to reach between 100 and 102 degrees.

By September 2, heat advisories remained in effect for the Jersey Shore region, where heat index values were expected to reach up to 102 degrees. Authorities have recommended staying hydrated, seeking air-conditioned environments, and limiting strenuous outdoor activities to prevent heat illness.
