Galician tourism and commercial economic trends
Overview
The economic landscape of Galicia shows varying trends across the commercial and tourism sectors. During the first half of 2026, the tourism industry experienced growth driven by a focus on quality and sustainability. Data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) indicates that hotel revenues rose by 5.3% to 174 million euros, with sector profitability increasing by 6.8%. This period saw over 2.95 million travelers and a 3.1% increase in overnight stays compared to the previous year. While the United States, Portugal, and Italy saw increases in visitor numbers, markets such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and France experienced declines.
By the end of July 2026, the hotel sector showed continued expansion, with total nominal revenues for the first seven months reaching 242.3 million euros. July specifically marked a historic milestone, with revenues hitting 68.3 million euros. Domestic tourism remains the primary driver, accounting for 76% of hotel nights.
Despite revenue growth, commercial activity in the Arousa region has been described as mixed and irregular. Business associations like Emgrobes noted that while visitor volumes are high, consumer spending is more restrained than in previous years. In Cambados, merchants attributed shifting patterns to high temperatures driving activity toward beaches. Conversely, the Outlet del Comercio Ortegano in Ortigueira was reported as a success, expanding its scope to include service sectors.
Socially, the LLYC Tourism Perception Barometer for Q2 2026 shows Galicia’s tourism reputation score rose to 6.2 out of 10. However, significant social unrest persists, with negative sentiment heavily concentrated on the issue of tourist housing in several cities.
