Overview

Genta Matsuda, a member of Travis Japan, stars as Ryo Sabazaki in the TV Asahi drama ‘Hadakanbou-tachi’, a live-action adaptation of a novel by Naoki Prize-winning author Kaori Ekuni. Filming for the series commenced in the Omotesando district of Tokyo.

To portray Sabazaki, a meticulous bespoke shoemaker, Matsuda underwent intensive training under master shoemaker Noriyuki Misawa. Misawa, who serves as the production supervisor for footwear and movement, noted Matsuda’s “unexpected dexterity” with specialized tools. The character’s silhouette also required Matsuda to undergo strict physical training to achieve a “lean, muscular physique.”

The plot explores a complex adult love triangle involving Sabazaki, a dentist named Momo (played by Rosa Kato), and her friend Kyoko (played by Akane Osawa). The series also features Yuya Takaki as Taku Ishiba, whose commitment to Momo contrasts with Sabazaki’s lifestyle. A promotional poster released prior to the October 3 premiere depicted the main characters in a composition intended to reflect themes of being “naked in both body and soul.”

As the series progressed, the narrative moved through Sabazaki inviting Momo to a share house and rising tensions involving Ishiba’s custom wedding shoe commission. By the fifth episode, aired October 31, the plot focused on Sabazaki realizing his feelings for Momo and confronting trauma from a past relationship with Hazuki Mizusaki (played by Rin Kataoka). A spin-off series, ‘Hadakanbou-tachi Another Story’, is currently streaming on TELASA, exploring the history between Sabazaki and Hazuki. The series features the song ‘EGO’ by Travis Japan as its theme.
