German consumer testing of household and personal care goods

Overview

Recent consumer product testing in Germany has demonstrated that discount and private-label brands frequently outperform premium name brands in household and personal care categories.

In laundry detergent evaluations, Stiftung Warentest placed several discount own-labels at the top, including dm’s ‘Denkmit’, Lidl’s ‘Formil’, and Rossmann’s ‘Domol’, with scores between 1.6 and 1.7. While powder detergents were noted as the cheapest option at approximately 16 cents per wash, Aldi’s ‘Tandil Ultra’ secured a win in the liquid category. Previous tests also confirmed that Aldi’s Tandil brand performs comparably to or better than Persil when removing tough stains like coffee and mustard.

Dishwasher tablet testing consistently shows that budget options significantly undercut premium brands. In evaluations of up to 30 different products, including multi-tabs and mono-tabs, Aldi’s ‘Power Force All-in-One’ and Rossmann’s ‘Domol Ultra Power All-in-One’ emerged as top performers. Subsequent studies by Stiftung Warentest involving 16 different detergents—including ten traditional tablets and six capsules—further confirmed that higher prices do not correlate with better cleaning efficiency. In these tests, which evaluated effectiveness against residues like dried egg yolk and tea stains, all seven products rated as ‘good’ were affordable private-label brands. The Aldi ‘Power Force All-In-One’ tablet secured the top position.

In personal care, Öko-Test evaluations of facial cleansing milks highlighted that many private-label options, such as Balea, Shisara, and Today, achieved top scores and low prices. Conversely, some name-brand products received unsatisfactory ratings; for instance, Garnier Hyaluron Barrier Protect Cream Cleanser was rated ‘unsatisfactory’ due to the presence of chlorphenesin and salicylic acid.
