Gomti River flooding in Lucknow

Overview

The Gomti River in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has breached its banks, causing severe flooding in low-lying neighborhoods such as Faizullaganj and Mallahi Tola. Water levels reached approximately 108.14 meters, roughly eight feet above normal, resulting in the inundation of homes, shops, and vehicles.

Minister Swatantar Dev Singh reported that the region experienced unprecedented rainfall, with nearly 25 percent of the annual total occurring within a 15-day window. This flooding is described as the most severe since 2008. As the situation evolved, flooding expanded to include upscale colonies, forcing families to evacuate to safer locations or local hotels. Major landmarks, including the Ekana Stadium and the Phoenix Palassio Mall areas, have been impacted. While river levels were later measured at 107.24 meters—1.26 meters below the warning level—backflow in drains caused significant waterlogging on the Shaheed Path service lanes.

In response, the district administration and the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) have launched relief and rescue operations. Under the direction of the Yogi government, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation is providing food, rations, and clean drinking water. Due to movement difficulties in submerged areas like Gulmi Kheda and Hayat Nagar, relief supplies are being transported via boats. Municipal teams, working with private organizations, have distributed approximately 1,900 food packets and water bottles.

To restore normalcy, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation has intensified cleaning and drainage operations in Zone-3 and Zone-6. Authorities are utilizing 60 pumps and 12 desilting machines to remove waterlogging, debris, and silt. To mitigate health risks and mosquito breeding in the aftermath, a large-scale sanitation campaign is underway, involving mechanical sweeping, fogging units, and the use of drones to spray anti-larva agents across approximately 67 acres in areas such as Lohramau and Daudnagar.
