Greek health ministry infrastructure upgrades

Overview

In early July 2026 the Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis opened renovated emergency departments on the islands of Kalymnos and Kos, expanding capacity and modernising equipment under the South Aegean ESFA programme. A week later the ministry answered parliamentary questions about health‑care in the Eastern Peloponnese, announcing a dedicated EKAB ambulance station in Loggia and creating new nursing‑aide and administrative posts at the Messenia Health Centre. The opening of a health centre in Aipeia was reconsidered after a national health‑map assessment.

Later in July the ministry turned to Western Macedonia. Georgiadis and Deputy Economy Minister Nikos Papathanasiou inaugurated the renovated emergency department of Mamatzios Hospital in Kozani, the modernised Servia Health Centre and a new oncology wing at Bodossakeio Hospital in Ptolemaida. Deputy Regional Health Officer Andreas Toulias led additional work meetings in Lamia, reviewing service improvements and preventive‑health actions for the region. All projects are funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund, part of a nationwide programme that has refurbished 93 hospitals and 156 health centres.

On 28 July Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the General Hospital of Leros, declaring the completion of the largest ESY infrastructure upgrade financed by the Recovery Fund. The renovation modernised the emergency department, cardiology, pathology, gynecology, paediatrics, surgical units and radiology laboratory, and added a 10‑bed artificial‑kidney unit. Mitsotakis also inspected related port works on Lakki, underscoring the broader impact of the fund on health services and local infrastructure.
