Greek military modernization and defense capabilities
Overview
Greece is undergoing a military transformation to adapt to an evolving security environment and protect its sovereignty. This modernization focuses on transitioning toward a networked defense architecture and integrating rapid technological advancements.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has characterized this military adaptation as a “national duty,” emphasizing the necessity of protecting sovereign rights under international law. His efforts include reviewing programs at the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAB) and engaging in bilateral discussions with Cypriot officials to coordinate defense interests.
During the October 28 national anniversary, military parades across the country commemorated the historical ‘OXI’ of 1940. In Thessaloniki, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described Greece as a “force of peace” that neither threatens nor accepts threats. He noted that the Greek Armed Forces are currently implementing the largest armament program in their history to provide a strong deterrent capability, linking this military strength to economic stability.
Recent commemorations in Thessaloniki featured the debut of several advanced technologies, including the ‘Achilles Shield’ air and missile defense system and specialized technology designed to detect and neutralize enemy drones. The parade also showcased Greek-made unmanned systems, the PULS missile system, Spike NLOS anti-tank missiles, Stryker armored vehicles, and the Bellera-class frigate ‘Kimon’. The aerial component included F-16 Viper, Mirage, and F-4 fighter jets, alongside the Hellenic Air Force ‘Zeus’ team.
President Konstantinos Tasoulas also addressed the commemorations, stressing that national unity and technological superiority are essential to deter potential threats. While government leaders emphasized defense and prosperity, opposition figures, such as PASOK President Nikos Androulakis, maintained that national sovereignty and international law remain “non-negotiable.”
