Greek PASOK fiscal and policy dispute

Overview

By late July 2026 the fiscal and policy clash between PASOK and the New Democracy government deepened. On 28 July the Greek Parliament approved a controversial water‑management bill that expanded the powers of state utilities EYDAP and EYATH, created a unified framework and a Thessaly Water Management Agency, and pledged to cut water losses. Environment Minister Stavros Papastavrou argued the reform was needed, while PASOK, KKE and other opposition parties warned it turned water into a marketable commodity and could raise costs for households, agriculture and industry, especially as AI‑driven data‑centre projects seek large water volumes.

The next day PASOK leaders, including party president Nikos Androulakis, accused the cabinet of misusing the EU’s €70 billion recovery fund, of failing to channel it into hospitals, housing or energy projects, and condemned a newly passed water‑law that reclassifies water as a commodity, echoing earlier concerns about water privatization. They also cited the on‑duty deaths of three firefighters as evidence of governmental neglect. PASOK reiterated its clean finances and called for transparency over the funding of Alex Tsipras’s ELAS movement.

Two days later PASOK political‑council member Anna Diamantopoulou urged the party to shift from poll battles to concrete parliamentary opposition, pressing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras for full disclosure of campaign finances and pledging to hold the government accountable for any alleged misuse of public or private funds.
