Greek public sector and education recruitment

In August 2026, the Greek government initiated several administrative processes regarding public sector staffing and education. The Ministry of Education announced that applications for substitute Special Educational Personnel (EEP) and Special Assistant Personnel (EVP) for the 2026-2027 school year would be accepted between August 14 and August 24. This includes roles for speech therapists, psychologists, and social workers. Concurrently, educational unions in Lemnos and Agios Efstratios requested the Ministry approve small-enrollment vocational classes to prevent students from having to relocate for training. Following these announcements, the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection (ASEP) launched broader recruitment drives. This included the hiring of 3,265 permanent employees for roles such as healthcare assistants, sanitation staff, and security personnel across various agencies. Additionally, the National Accreditation System (ESYD) sought to fill 23 fixed-term positions requiring higher education qualifications in specialized fields like engineering, chemistry, and biology. Further administrative reforms have been proposed by the Ministry of Interior to restructure leadership selection. A draft law suggests that participation in an ASEP electronic panhellenic competition will become the “sole requirement” for public sector employees seeking department head positions. This structural change includes the creation of a digital Registry of Candidate Heads and the implementation of written examinations at least once every four years, with the first round of testing expected in 2027. Recent updates indicate that this proposed reform for approximately 30,000 leadership positions is currently under public consultation. For the initial implementation, candidates will require six years of public service, while the general requirement for future applicants is set at three years. ASEP is also managing additional large-scale recruitment efforts, including 1,866 permanent and contract positions for persons with disabilities (PWD) across various educational categories.
