Greek rail and metro infrastructure works
Overview
Greece continues to manage various transportation disruptions and infrastructure projects across its rail and metro networks.
In the Patras region, Hellenic Train suspended services on the Patra-Kaminia section through September 2026 to facilitate Greek Railways (OSE) infrastructure works, utilizing replacement bus services for connectivity.
In Athens, Metro Line 3 is undergoing extended track replacement works. Between October 11 and October 22, 2026, six stations—Panormou, Katehaki, Ethniki Amyna, Cholargos, Nomismatokopeio, and Agia Paraskevi—will close early at 21:40. During these periods, Line 3 train traffic will be restricted to two segments: between Dimotiko Theatro – Ambelokipi and Chalandri – Dim. Plakentias – Airport. For airport-bound travelers, trains will depart from Chalandri, while trains arriving from the airport will terminate at Chalandri station. To assist passengers, a special bus line, X20, will be available.
Additionally, restoration efforts continue on the Athens–Thessaloniki railway axis following storm damage. While double-track construction is complete, full service recovery remains delayed by ongoing signaling tests, electrification works scheduled through late October, and pending certification for the ETCS system. Hellenic Train currently operates only two service pairs on this route.
