Grosseto Roselle sports centre dispute

Overview

The municipality of Grosseto reiterated on 20 July 2026 that its council resolution only set public‑interest guidelines for a mediation procedure concerning the Roselle sports centre, without imposing sanctions, renewing the concession or infringing council powers. The proposed addendum would require the concessionaire to cover the municipal loan, provide a twelve‑month bank guarantee, submit a new economic‑financial plan and waive compensation claims.

On 30 July 2026 the Guardia di Finanza opened a criminal investigation after a forged guarantee was discovered in the agreement, prompting fraud complaints from the municipality and the local football club US Grosseto.

By 2 August 2026 the municipal administration said the addendum had never been signed, the mediation process had been halted, and a report was filed with the financial police. The provincial authority of Grosseto also lodged a complaint and submitted a new draft guarantee.

On 6 August 2026 the province revised its Equality Commission rules to admit participants as young as 16, while the municipal controversy over the guarantee intensified. Opposition councilors criticised the premature signing of the mediation protocol, and the municipality set a 12 August deadline for presenting a valid guarantee after rejecting a draft from an unqualified company.
