Guatemalan border enforcement and migrant movement

Overview

A group of approximately 400 Honduran migrants traveling toward the United States has encountered increased scrutiny from Guatemalan authorities. Migrants cited economic hardship and government instability as drivers for the journey.

During inspections conducted on September 21 and 22 at the El Cinchado border crossing in Izabal, Guatemalan officials reinforced border controls. While roughly 250 individuals were permitted to continue after providing documentation, the Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM) issued orders of departure to 106 individuals for irregular entry. Authorities provided humanitarian assistance to 50 family members and transferred eight unaccompanied adolescents to the Procuraduría General de la Nación (PGN) for protection. IGM Director Danilo Rivera characterized the movement as a “daily flow of people coinciding on border routes.”

Following these inspections, a migrant group of approximately 300 to 400 people, primarily from Honduras but including individuals from El Salvador and Guatemala, entered Mexico from Guatemala. Named ‘Fe y Esperanza’ (Faith and Hope), the group crossed peacefully into the Mexican state of Chiapas via the Rodolfo Robles international bridge. After a 12-hour, 40-kilometer journey through municipalities such as Suchiate and Tuxtla Chico, the group arrived in Tapachula.

As of late September, the ‘Fe y Esperanza’ caravan has resumed its northward trek through southern Mexico toward the United States. The group has expanded from its initial 300 members to over 600 people as individuals from El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Haiti joined the movement in Tapachula. Despite heavy rains caused by tropical weather in the Pacific, the caravan continues to move. The movement has drawn attention from U.S. authorities; the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responded to the progress with the message, “Our time has come,” while also stating, “The border is closed.”
