Healthcare capacity expansion in South America

Overview

Healthcare services in Venezuela, Chile, Peru, and Argentina continue to implement initiatives to expand surgical capacity and reduce patient waiting lists through specialized campaigns.

In Peru, the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño (INSN) in Breña has announced the ‘Sonrisatón’ campaign, scheduled for October 16 to 18. This initiative provides free surgery for children and adolescents aged 3 months to 17 years. The program serves patients with the Seguro Integral de Salud (SIS), those from private clinics, and individuals lacking insurance, whose costs will be covered by the ‘Damas de Rojo’ of the INSN.

In Argentina, the Hospital de San Martín de los Andes is hosting a high-complexity surgical session focused on cleft lip and alveolar palate (FLAP) malformations. Led by Dr. Mariano Ojeda and a multidisciplinary team, the session aims to provide specialized care locally to reduce the need for patients to travel to other medical centers.

Previous efforts in the region include the National Surgical Plan in Venezuela, which facilitated hundreds of procedures in Zulia, and collaborative operations in Chile, such as varicose vein treatments in Chiloé and management protocol reviews in Talca. In Peru, earlier expansions included pediatric cardiovascular surgery campaigns in Trujillo and the integration of 4K laparoscopy in Huaraz.
