Hungarian municipal by-elections
Overview
Several Hungarian municipalities have undergone by-elections following the dissolution of local representative bodies or resignations. These changes have been driven by political disagreements, personal conflicts, professional transitions, and financial difficulties.
In early September, elections were held in Mosonszolnok, Vértesszőlős, Apce, Mihályháza, Nagyrécsen, Pusztaapát, and Budaörs. By mid-September, further elections took place in Csobánka, Mátraderecskén, and Pusztaszentlászlón, where the council had dissolved due to disputes over the mayor’s salary.
On September 20, by-elections in Bátaszék, Niklán, Sávoly, and Üllő resulted in new leadership. In Bátaszék, independent Béres Judit won the mayoral race with 60.24 percent of the vote, filling the vacancy left by Róbert Bozsolik. In Niklán, Szabolcs Hársházi was elected mayor. In Sávoly, Andrea Csallóné Matakovics secured the seat following the retirement of Mayor Tibor Schuller. In Üllő, a vacancy was filled in the second constituency following the resignation of Szilvia Nagyné Prém. A planned Roma minority election in Budapest’s 10th district was canceled due to a lack of candidates.
In early October, by-elections were held in six additional municipalities. Gersekaráton and Porcsalmán held elections following the dissolution of their representative bodies in June. In Vaján, a mayoral race was triggered by a resignation in May. Additionally, representative elections were conducted in Kunbaracson, following the resignation of three out of four independent representatives, and in Nagykátán and Budaörs.
