Tropical Storm Vance threatens Mexico's Pacific coast

Overview

Tropical Storm Vance, which weakened from a Category 2 hurricane, continues to pose a significant threat to Mexico’s southwest Pacific coast. As of October 25, the storm is moving northwest at speeds between 7 and 11 km/h, though the National Hurricane Center reports it may turn toward the north later this week. The system is currently losing intensity due to wind shear and dry air.

The storm's center was located approximately 455 km south of Manzanillo, Colima, and 510 km west-southwest of Acapulco, Guerrero. Sustained winds are reported at approximately 110 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 140 km/h.

Heavy rainfall is expected to trigger flash flooding and mudslides across Colima, Michoacán, Jalisco, Guerrero, Nayarit, Sinaloa, and Durango. While most areas expect 5 to 10 centimeters of rain, isolated totals in vulnerable mountainous regions could reach up to 17 or 18 centimeters.

Coastal risks include dangerous sea conditions. Wave heights are projected to reach 4 to 5 meters in Michoacán and Guerrero, and 2 to 3 meters in Colima and Jalisco.

In response, Mexico's National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) has deployed a Liaison and Coordination Mission (ECO) to command posts in Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit, and Sinaloa to coordinate preventive actions with local authorities. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to avoid crossing flooded rivers and to remain alert to rising water levels.
