Hyderabad and Cyberabad drunk driving enforcement
Overview
Police in the Hyderabad and Cyberabad regions have implemented intensive enforcement drives targeting drunk driving to improve road safety.
During weekend operations, hundreds of motorists were apprehended. In Cyberabad, 292 offenders were booked, primarily involving two-wheelers. In Hyderabad, authorities apprehended 397 drivers, including riders, four-wheeler drivers, and auto drivers. Breathalyzer tests recorded several individuals with high Blood Alcohol Concentration levels.
Building on these efforts, Cyberabad Traffic Police conducted a special enforcement campaign on September 18 and 19, resulting in the arrest of 80 individuals. This group comprised 62 two-wheeler riders, 16 car drivers, and two auto-rickshaw drivers. Blood alcohol tests showed that 63 individuals had levels between 36 and 200 mg per 100 ml, exceeding the permitted limit of 30 mg per 100 ml. Nine individuals recorded levels between 201 and 300 mg, while eight others recorded levels between 301 and 550 mg. All suspects are scheduled to be presented in court.
On September 25 and 26, the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate registered 97 additional cases of drunk driving. This operation involved 76 two-wheeler riders, 15 car drivers, five three-wheeler drivers, and one heavy vehicle driver. Of those apprehended, 89 faced penalties such as fines, jail time, or community service.
Officials have signaled a zero-tolerance policy, noting that those causing fatal accidents while intoxicated may face penalties of up to 10 years of imprisonment under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
