Nigeria qualifies for ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup

Overview

The Africa Division 1 Qualifier for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup was held at the TCA Cricket Arena in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from August 30 to September 5, 2026. Eight teams competed for a single qualification spot for the 2027 tournament, to be co-hosted by Bangladesh and Nepal.

Nigeria’s Junior Female YellowGreens completed a perfect group stage to secure the top spot in Group A. Their campaign included victories over Uganda, Malawi, and hosts Tanzania. In the match against Tanzania, Nigeria posted 133 for 7, led by Omosigho Eguakun’s 50 runs, before restricting the hosts to 76 for 8.

Nigeria ultimately secured qualification for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup for the second consecutive time by winning the tournament final against Zimbabwe. In a close contest, Nigeria posted 98 for 6, with Captain Christabel Chukwuonye contributing 21 runs, supported by Beauty Oguai (19) and Jessica Bieni (15). The Nigerian bowling unit successfully defended the total, bowling Zimbabwe out for 94 in 19.5 overs. Peace Usen led the bowling effort with three wickets for 19 runs, while Anointed Akhigbe secured the final wicket to seal the four-run victory. Jennifer Godwin also contributed two wickets during the final.

In the tournament's placement matches, Uganda’s Baby Victoria Pearls finished in third place after defeating Rwanda by seven wickets. Other participating nations included Kenya, Namibia, and Malawi.
