Inauguration of Carlos Vila Nova in São Tomé and Príncipe

Overview

Carlos Vila Nova has been inaugurated for a second five-year term as President of São Tomé and Príncipe following his reelection in July, where he secured 55.88% of the vote in the first round. During his inaugural address, Vila Nova called for national unity, political stability, and a culture of dialogue, stating that political differences should not be transformed into “national enmities.”

The ceremony, held at the National Assembly headquarters, was attended by several international leaders, including Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, and Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch.

Following the inauguration, the archipelago is seeing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced preparations for a bilateral summit intended to deepen cooperation and encourage investment from Portuguese companies.

Additionally, Mozambique's Prime Minister, Maria Benvinda Levi, proposed establishing dedicated working groups to convert existing opportunities into concrete projects. While current cooperation focuses on political-diplomatic spheres and professional training in medicine, policing, and justice, the proposed expansion targets economic sectors such as trade, agriculture, and fisheries. This includes potential exchanges involving São Tomé and Príncipe’s cocoa and coffee in return for Mozambican agricultural expertise.
