Overview

The Jammu & Kashmir administration continued its 100‑day “Nasha Mukt” operation into early August, reporting a total seizure of 1,431 kg of narcotics—including heroin—and the attachment of assets worth about ₹188.9 crore. The drive logged 2,292 NDPS cases and 2,581 arrests, while 264 medical stores were cited and hundreds of licences, vehicle registrations and passports were cancelled. A constable, Aftab Ahmed, was dismissed after being caught with heroin, underscoring the zero‑tolerance stance toward police involvement in drug networks.

Parallel to enforcement, the centre‑supported anti‑drug campaign in the region expanded its outreach. Over 1.20 crore people have been reached through 5,851 awareness programmes in 2024‑25, and 6,346 programmes in the current financial year have engaged more than 6.24 lakh individuals. The effort involves 8,565 volunteers and a network of rehabilitation facilities, including one integrated centre, three outreach centres, two peer‑led programmes, six district de‑addiction centres and 21 treatment units in government hospitals. To date, 28,366 individuals have undergone treatment and 2,500 alleged traffickers have been arrested. A seminar at Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University on 2 August highlighted the “Drug‑Free Youth‑Developed India” drive and featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warning on the national security threat posed by drug addiction.
