India's Viksit Bharat 2047 and economic growth targets

Overview

The Indian government continues to pursue its ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ plan, aiming to transform the nation into a developed economy. Union Minister Piyush Goyal has reinforced a target of a $30 trillion economy by 2047, emphasizing the ‘Make in India’ brand and the importance of a circular economy. Goyal noted that goods and services exports have grown approximately 73 percent over the last six years, with a current-year target of $1 trillion. He highlighted that nine free trade agreements are already providing preferential market access.

Complementing these national goals, regional leadership has proposed localized roadmaps. At the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu proposed transforming Southern India into a $10 trillion economy by 2047. His strategy includes high-speed bullet train corridors, an integrated transport network, and the development of a ‘Quantum Valley’ in Amaravati to host India’s largest quantum computer.

Economic analysts continue to debate the feasibility of these timelines. A report by brokerage Equirus suggests India could reach a $20 trillion economy by 2036 if it maintains 18% nominal growth and implements a 20-step reform agenda. This includes bringing fuel under the GST and creating a sovereign wealth fund. However, some economists, such as Purvi Mundhra, describe these targets as “highly aspirational” due to potential risks including inflation, rupee depreciation, and global protectionism.
