India Fit India cycling promotion

Overview

In July 2026, the Indian government conducted the 80th Fit India Sunday on Cycling at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Organized alongside the Satya Sai Seva Foundation, the event featured Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who emphasized that fitness is essential for India to become a developed nation by 2047. Mandaviya noted that one-quarter of Indians are overweight and promoted cycling to reduce pollution, traffic, and fuel consumption. The event included parallel rides in cities like Guwahati.

Two weeks later, the campaign expanded to its 82nd iteration, with Mandaviya participating in a nationwide roll-out covering more than 15,000 locations. This effort was coordinated with Ayushman Bharat health centres, local administrations, and the Sports Authority of India to combat obesity and promote a zero-carbon lifestyle.

By August 2026, the initiative reached its 85th edition. In Hanol, Gujarat, Mandaviya led a cycling event under the theme ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan,’ which integrates fitness with campaigns against drug addiction. Participants in Gujarat took an anti-drug oath following community activities such as Garba and various sports. Simultaneously, a mega event was held at Delhi’s Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, featuring yoga and Zumba before a 5-kilometer cycle around India Gate and Kartavya Path. Since its inception in December 2024, the movement has seen over 30 lakh participants.

In September 2026, the 89th edition took place in Surat under the theme ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat.’ Led by Mandaviya and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, the event included a 6-km ride from the Sardar Patel Statue to Sarthana Zoo. Former table tennis player Sharath Kamal noted the movement is essential for the mental and physical well-being of young people. The nationwide campaign has now seen participation from over 5 million people across 25,000 locations.
