Indian startup funding volatility and sectoral shifts 2026
Overview
The first half of 2026 saw dramatic swings in Indian venture‑capital activity. Early May delivered over $232 million in weekly funding, followed by a massive surge to $1.12 billion in late May, driven largely by fintech—including a $900 million round from CRED. However, this momentum faced a significant pullback; year‑on‑year venture capital investment fell 55% through May, a phenomenon described as a “funding winter” linked to global interest rate shifts.
By July, weekly inflows had cooled significantly. The week of 18‑24 July saw $209 million across 14 deals, a 26% drop from the prior week. The final week of July saw a further 32% decline to roughly $142 million. Despite the overall slowdown, AI-focused companies captured the bulk of late-July capital, securing approximately $93 million in three rounds, including Freehand’s $75 million Series A.
Through the first seven months of 2026, the landscape showed mixed results. While the total number of VC deals declined by 13% year-on-year, the total funding value saw a modest 5% increase, reflecting investor caution and valuation discipline. In the week of 24–28 August, startups raised $210.3 million across 23 deals, a 9.8% weekly decline, with e-commerce and advanced hardware driving over 51% of the total.
Sectoral shifts remain pronounced. Fintech continues to be a pillar, raising over $2.2 billion in H1 2026, with more than 70% of capital directed toward established, late-stage players. The semiconductor industry raised $61.9 million in H1 2026, while the space technology sector is expanding, with 113 authorisations granted to 52 entities by IN-SPACe. Additionally, VC firms are expanding commitments, such as Accel closing an oversubscribed $550 million India-focused fund.
