Indonesia sustainable tourism and ecosystem development
Overview
Indonesia is advancing initiatives to integrate tourism development with environmental sustainability and ecosystem management.
Industry stakeholders are focusing on experiential and green tourism, aiming to connect destinations, culture, and local communities. On a national level, the Ministry of National Development Planning is supporting the broader tourism ecosystem, including sport tourism, alongside the 2026-2045 Blue Carbon Ecosystem Protection and Management Roadmap to enhance climate resilience.
Recent developments highlight growing collaboration between the public and private sectors. Following the model of Dusun Bambu, EIGER Nature is developing an ecotourism initiative in Megamendung, Bogor, aimed at integrating nature restoration, conservation, environmental education, and community empowerment.
In October 2026, EIGER Nature received recognition from WALHI Jawa Barat and WWF-Indonesia for its commitment to nature-based area development. During a site tour involving 22 representatives from WWF-Indonesia and the WWF Global network, participants reviewed restoration efforts on critical lands within the PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) I Regional 2 area and conservation activities in the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park utilization zone.
Aditya Bayunanda, CEO of WWF-Indonesia, noted that the initiative demonstrates how the private sector can balance business operations with environmental stewardship and community benefits. He emphasized that such collaboration could support regional sustainability and create new conservation financing opportunities. WALHI Jawa Barat also praised the management’s openness to feedback regarding environmental documentation and licensing.
