Infant kidnappings in Brazil

Overview

Two separate incidents involving the kidnapping of infants in Brazil have been reported. In the first case, a 28-day-old baby named Ayla Emanuelly was kidnapped in the Universitário neighborhood of Campo Grande. The infant’s 17-year-old mother and her 12-year-old sister were lured by Suzilaine da Graça Costa, 37, under the pretense of a R$ 100 paid babysitting job arranged via WhatsApp. The victims were reportedly held captive and forced to hand over the infant under threat from Costa and approximately 10 men. Following a joint operation between Brazilian and Paraguayan police forces, which utilized mobile phone signals to track the suspects, the child was rescued in Pedro Juan Caballero, Paraguay. The rescue was supported by the Amber Alert Brasil system. Two suspects, Costa and Alex Melo de Abreu, were arrested and repatriated to Brazil. After medical and psychosocial evaluations, the infant was cleared of injuries and, following authorization from Judge Katy Braun do Prado, was reunited with her family. The case remains under investigation by the Specialized Police Station for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (Depca) in Mato Grosso do Sul. Investigators believe the motive was for the suspect to raise the baby as her own. In a separate incident in Manaus, a 23-day-old baby named Ayla Sophia was abducted after her mother was lured to a meeting under the pretense of receiving clothing and diaper donations via social media. The Amazonas Civil Police reported that the mother was drugged and assaulted during the encounter. Suspect Jaqueline da Silva Braz, 24, reportedly presented the infant to others as her own child. The infant was later discovered by residents in the Santo Agostinho neighborhood, showing signs of dehydration and sun exposure, and was taken to a maternity hospital.
