Infectious disease outbreaks in Vietnam

Overview

Vietnam continues to face rising rates of various infectious diseases. Dengue fever remains a critical concern, particularly in Dong Nai, where health authorities report the disease is present in 100% of communes and wards. The province has recorded nearly 18,000 cases and 8 deaths through week 41, with medical professionals warning that children may experience severe complications, such as shock and multi-organ damage, as early as the third or fourth day of illness. In Ho Chi Minh City, cumulative dengue cases have exceeded 40,678, while hand, foot, and mouth disease has also seen significant increases. The city reported over 1,800 hand, foot, and mouth cases in a single week—a 7.9% rise over the previous four-week average—bringing the yearly total to over 42,315 cases.

Influenza A remains a major driver of respiratory illness. In Hanoi, medical facilities report an average of 200 to 300 influenza patients weekly. Doctors at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases have highlighted severe cases among vulnerable populations, including elderly patients with hypertension, stroke history, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) requiring intensive respiratory support. Medical experts warn that the virus can cause rapid respiratory decline, pneumonia, and respiratory failure, noting that severity cannot be judged solely by fever levels.
