Infrastructure and integrated healthcare proposals in Vaglio

The Vaglio Lise area in Cosenza remains a focal point for various infrastructure and development proposals. Initially, Mayor Franz Caruso advocated for the construction of a new second-level Hub hospital, describing the project as essential for the province and the capital city’s development. The administration has utilized legal appeals and public demonstrations to protect the city’s status as a healthcare hub.

Following these efforts, a separate proposal was introduced to develop a large exhibition and congress center in the area to stimulate tourism and commerce. While some officials suggested treating the convention center as a distinct development from the hospital project, Mayor Caruso has since proposed an integrated healthcare model.

In a recent address at an event organized by the ASP of Cosenza, Caruso advocated for a dual-track strategy that combines a modern hospital Hub with a robust network of local services. He emphasized that municipalities should act as ‘sentinels’ for citizen needs to ensure healthcare remains a right rather than a commodity.

Building on this vision, the ASP Cosenza is now implementing a major territorial healthcare reform funded by the PNRR. This initiative introduces a network of nine community hospitals and 26 community houses designed to bridge the gap between home care and hospital settings. The expansion includes 180 additional beds and the involvement of over 1,000 professionals. Several community hospitals are already operational in areas such as Scalea and San Giovanni in Fiore, with further facilities expected in Cassano all’Ionio. Mayor Caruso continues to advocate for the integration of these local services with the proposed modern hospital hub to ensure comprehensive care.
