Israel-Gaza conflict and ceasefire violations

Overview

Despite a US-mediated ceasefire in place since October 2025, Israeli military operations have continued in the Gaza Strip. On October 14, 2026, Palestinian officials reported four fatalities: two young men in a vehicle strike near Khan Yunis and two others, including 33-year-old Reem Asaad Awad, in an airstrike on a Gaza City apartment. The Israeli military stated it is investigating the Gaza City strike and maintains it targeted a Hamas member.

By October 20, 2026, further incidents were reported. In Gaza City, an airstrike killed Akram Yassin and his wife, Dina Abu Baker; Israel claimed the target was a Hamas fighter. In Khan Younis, a 17-year-old boy was killed by gunfire, and another individual died from gunfire in the Zeitoun suburb. Reports also indicated artillery attacks south of Khan Younis and increased drone and fighter jet activity across central Gaza.

On October 22, 2026, reports indicated the Israeli military is expanding its territorial control, moving from the north toward the center and west. This expansion has left many residents unable to return home, with estimates suggesting nearly two-thirds of Gaza is under Israeli military control or subject to access restrictions. During this period, four Palestinians were killed in a 24-hour window, including a young girl near the Jabalia refugee camp.

Humanitarian concerns are rising as the World Food Programme has cut aid to 500,000 Palestinians due to funding shortages. While Israel maintains Hamas is rearming, Palestinian officials report that shelling and assassinations persist. Gaza health officials report at least 1,500 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire began, while Israel reports four of its soldiers have been killed by militants.
