Italian community Alzheimer's support initiatives

Overview

Community initiatives in Italy continue to expand support and awareness for individuals living with Alzheimer's and dementia.

In Piove di Sacco, the Alzheimer Piove di Sacco odv association maintains its relief center through the summer months, serving approximately 50 people. In Gavirate, the Alzheimer Fest utilizes physical activity, such as cycling rallies, for engagement. In Muggia, a twinning agreement between the Dementia Friendly Community (DFC) of Muggia and the DFC of Val Pellice has been established to foster social participation.

To mark World Alzheimer's Day, several new regional initiatives have emerged. In Tuscany, the Alzheimer Fest held workshops in Montopoli in Val d’Arno to combat social isolation, while in Arezzo, the Fossombroni Nursing Home organized a flash mob with 120 purple balloons to advocate for increasing RSA bed capacity from 80 to 120.

In Lombardy, awareness efforts included the inauguration of a purple bench in Castellanza's Parco Cantoni by Alzheimer Café Accorsi and Cooperativa La Banda. Additionally, a daycare center in Martinengo received a 325,000 euro renovation. Regional councilor Miriam Cominelli has called for improved access to innovative anti-amyloid therapies and better management of RSA fees.

In the Veneto region, EnEA (Ente Educazione Assistenza) continues its series of ‘Alzheimer Cafes’ in Treviso through December 2026 to support families and caregivers. Meanwhile, in Basilicata, the Potenza Local Health Authority (ASP) is hosting information points and community meetings focused on prevention and diagnosis.
