Kia PV5 WAV mobility use case and launch
Overview
Hyundai Motor Group has demonstrated the practical applications of the Kia PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) through its ‘Green Trip’ social contribution project. A video titled ‘The Moving Room’ showcased a trip taken by Kim On-yu, a man who had been hospitalized for 23 years, allowing him to travel to the seaside with his family. The vehicle’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology enabled the operation of essential medical equipment, such as oxygen generators, during the journey.
Kia has transitioned the PV5 WAV from a demonstration model to a production vehicle using a ‘Made-In-Plant’ strategy, where accessible versions are developed and manufactured directly within Kia’s own facilities rather than through third-party conversions. This electric minibus is designed for both private and commercial use and is available through standard dealerships.
Technical specifications include a two-stage telescopic side ramp integrated into a subfloor, which allows for direct boarding from sidewalks with an adjustable incline. The interior configuration accommodates a wheelchair in the second-row space while providing seating for an accompanying person and a third row. The vehicle offers two battery options—51.5 kWh and 71.2 kWh—providing a driving range of up to 391 kilometers.
