Konjic, Bosnia wildfire

Overview

By August 8, 2026, wildfires in the Konjic region of Bosnia and Herzegovina intensified, spreading across the Kanjina and Živašnica areas. The fires have threatened critical infrastructure, specifically the M-17 highway and the Sarajevo-Mostar railway line. Due to the steep and inaccessible terrain, ground combat has been hindered, necessitating a large-scale mobilization of emergency services from Konjic, Prenj, Sarajevo, Tarčin, and Jablanica.

As the fires expanded to include Brđani, Džepi, and Džepska planina, the aerial response grew. Following approval from the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Defense Minister Zukan Helez ordered the deployment of a second helicopter from the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (OSBiH) to assist local crews. The aerial effort now includes OSBiH helicopters, Air Tractor aircraft, and a helicopter from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska.

Despite efforts to localize certain zones, high temperatures and strong winds continue to cause flare-ups. While no houses or structures are currently under immediate threat, local authorities in Konjic have submitted an official request for international assistance to support ongoing aerial firefighting operations.
