Overview

Following the February 2026 attacks on the Woro and Nuku communities in Kwara State’s Kaiama LGA, which left dozens dead and hundreds abducted, security forces launched a joint operation on 5 August 2026. Coordinated by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre and involving the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Police, the raid freed 308 victims—163 from Woro and 145 from other sites in Niger State—after locating them in the forest of Kainji Lake National Park, New Bussa LGA. President Bola Tinubu described the operation as the “largest same-day rescue ever carried out by the joint security team.”

Survivors recounted six months of jihadist captivity marked by extreme deprivation. While many victims have been reunited with their families, the aftermath of the crisis has introduced new tensions. On 27 August 2026, 163 Woro residents were escorted back to Kaiama by local officials, including Kaiama LGA Chairman Abubakar Danladi and Emir Omar Shehu Muazu, following two weeks of medical and emotional support in Ilorin.

By early September, residents in Ilorin East and Kaiama raised allegations of misconduct against security forces. Some community members claim that certain police and military personnel have failed to respond to attacks and have instead assisted criminals by directing families to specific locations to deliver ransom payments.

Concurrently, community leaders in Woro and Nuku are calling for government financial intervention to support the 163 rescued victims. While praising the security interventions of President Tinubu and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, leaders emphasized that economic empowerment is necessary to help victims rebuild lives and businesses lost during the crisis.
