Lagos State University leadership transition

Overview

Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo has officially assumed office as the 10th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), succeeding Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, whose tenure concluded on September 19, 2026. Appointed by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Professor Badejo is a Professor of Counselling Psychology with over 30 years of academic and research experience.

Following her appointment, Professor Badejo unveiled an eight-point strategic agenda designed to enhance the institution’s global competitiveness and local relevance. The pillars of this agenda include academic excellence, research and innovation, financial sustainability, and infrastructure and digital transformation. Notably, the administration plans to deploy artificial intelligence and digital tools, aiming to establish at least one smart classroom in every faculty within the next year. Other focus areas include staff welfare, student mentorship, governance, and community engagement. To support financial sustainability, the university intends to diversify revenue through grants, endowments, and strategic partnerships.

Professor Badejo has pledged to lead through “dialogue, participation, and inclusiveness” to foster collective engagement in advancing the university’s objectives.

Following the conclusion of her term, a spokesperson for Professor Olatunji-Bello addressed social media controversy regarding her previous comments on university funding. The spokesperson clarified that Olatunji-Bello’s remarks concerning the ₦1m annual cost of quality undergraduate education were meant to “highlight the expenses required for global-standard education and the need for diversified funding,” rather than suggesting such costs be directly transferred to students or parents.
