Overview

Heavy rainfall in Vietnam has triggered a series of landslides affecting infrastructure and local communities. On August 8, a landslide on Provincial Road 543D in Nghệ An province blocked the roadway near Xốp Típ village. While authorities were able to clear the debris and restore traffic by that afternoon without reported injuries, the situation escalated later in the month. By late August, intensified rainfall caused widespread landslides in Nghệ An, specifically impacting the Pu Huong Nature Reserve buffer zone. In Nga My commune, a 20 km dirt road suffered multiple landslides, including a 15 km stretch leading to Na Ngan village that was blocked by debris and fallen trees. Rising waters in the Nam Ngan stream isolated approximately 740 residents, threatening access to medical services, education, and agricultural transport. In Quang Ngai province, roughly 10,000 cubic meters of earth and rock fell onto roads in Mang Ri commune. By early September, massive landslides occurred in the mountainous communes of Muong Long and Muong Tip in Nghệ An. In Muong Long, thousands of tons of earth and rock collapsed, burying temporary roads and cutting off access to villages including Sa Lay, Tham Hang, and Tham Hoc. Although recent rainfall had decreased, landslides continued through August 31 and September 1 due to previously saturated soil. In Muong Tip, large boulders weighing several tons rolled onto Provincial Road 543D, blocking the sole access route to the commune. By late September, severe landslides and flooding hit Nghệ An and Thanh Hóa provinces. In Nghệ An, a massive landslide in Huồi Pai village buried a section of Provincial Road 543C, isolating approximately 300 households and between 1,000 and 1,200 people in Huồi Pai and Chà Lúm villages. In Thanh Hóa, a natural disaster emergency was declared following widespread flooding that affected approximately 9,000 households.
