Latvia U-16 men and women basketball championship success

Overview

The Latvia U-16 men's national basketball team has won the European Championship for the first time in history. In the final held in Oradea, Romania, Latvia defeated France 75-69 to complete the tournament with an undefeated record.

Despite France maintaining a narrow one-point lead at halftime, Latvia regained control during the third quarter with a 24-11 run. Other key contributors included Markuss Jahovičs, who also earned a spot on the symbolic All-Tournament Team, Markuss Aleksandrovs with 14 points, and Matīss Preimanis with 10 points. Following the victory, the team was scheduled to be welcomed home in Riga by fans and officials.

In the women's U-16 tournament, the Latvian national team has also seen significant progress. After a 74-63 victory against Israel, the team advanced to the semifinals in Pitești, Romania, where they are scheduled to face Spain. The women's team, led by head coach Elviss Brokāns, reached the semifinals following victories over Romania, Hungary, and Turkey, despite a group stage loss to Italy.
