Lazio stadium project development at Flaminio
Overview
The development of the Lazio football club stadium project at Flaminio continues to face regulatory and architectural challenges. Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri recently confirmed that while a preliminary services conference yielded a positive opinion, the club must adapt its project to meet specific requirements from the State Superintendency to preserve the original Pier Luigi Nervi design.
As of late 2026, the project is entering a critical phase regarding the municipal government's decision on the concession of public interest, expected by October. To address heritage constraints and ensure the historic peninsula remains visible without obstructing the Auditorium or the Palazzetto dello Sport, Lazio is revising its architectural plans. These modifications include maintaining the canopy (pensilina) and lowering the height of the second tier to align with the neighboring Auditorium Parco della Musica.
These adjustments have impacted the project's scale. While initial proposals aimed for a capacity of approximately 50,750 spectators with a budget of €480 million, revised plans have reduced the capacity to approximately 47,000 seats. Despite these changes, the club aims to transform the site into a modern venue by 2032, allowing them to move away from sharing the Stadio Olimpico. Controversy persists regarding capacity, as some critics and supporters' groups suggest preservation guidelines could further limit seating to between 30,000 and 35,000.
